Postgraduate Teaching

I currently teach postgraduate classes in the Graduate School of Media and Communication at Hokkaido University. In the Spring semester I run a seminar titled ‘Bodies and Gender’ as well as contributing to a masters seminar in Japanese studies. I have previously taught courses such as a ‘Graduate Seminar on Cultural Anthropology’ at the University of Tokyo, as well as ‘Perspectives on Food and Illness in Japan’ at the PhD Summer Program at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and ‘Health and Illness in Japan’ at the University of Michigan.

I am available to supervise masters and PhD students in topics of gender and sexuality in Japan or on aspects related to food and health in Japan in the disciplines of anthropology or sociology. Please note that any prospective student must have been trained previously in any of the following disciplines: Socio-cultural anthropology, Gender Studies, Sociology, or Japanese Studies. Supervision is available primarily in English. I will consider students who want to be supervised in Japanese, but in such a case you will need to find an alternative source of Japanese academic writing support or proof-reading.

Prospective students who are interested in working with me should contact me by email (cook[AT]imc.hokudai.ac.jp) before application, and include the following: 1. Your planned research proposal (including which language you plan to write your thesis in); 2. A full CV (resume); 3. A cover letter detailing why you want to work with me as your supervisor. Please note that I am unable to work with all students that contact me, so contacting me with the above materials does not mean that I will definitely be able to work with you.
