Undergraduate Teaching

I teach on the bachelors degree in Modern Japanese Studies (MJSP) at Hokkaido University, one of the top ten universities in Japan. As a social and medical anthropologist my teaching incorporates classes in the anthropology of Japan as well as social theory. Currently I teach Introduction to Japanese Studies III (Society); Gender & Sexuality in Contemporary Japan; Multiculturality in Hokkaido and Japan; Ethnographies of Japan; and Introduction to Social Theory. My classes are highly interactive incorporating lots of student discussion, based on pre-assigned materials as well as lectures.

In 2022-2023 I was the invited Toyota Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan where I taught a mixed undergraduate/postgraduate class on Health and Illness in Japan.
