My research interests focus most broadly on gender, health, illness, labour, intimacy, and well being. My current research focuses on experiences of food allergies in Japan and the UK, exploring how the individual and social intersect, interact, and are embodied, and how cultural conceptions of food, food sharing, health, illness and the body shape experiences of food allergies. The project has three primary areas of investigation. The first relates to individual and affective experiences of allergies. The second explores social experiences of food allergies and how people manage a variety of social arenas. The third explores interactions with institutions such as schools, workplaces, and with respective medical communities in relation to diagnoses, management, and treatment of food allergies. The first and second parts of the research were funded by a JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C) titled: ‘When Food is Risky: Food Allergies in Japan and the UK’. Grant number: 16K03211 (2016-2019). Amount: 2,210,000JPY. The third part of the research has been awarded a JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C) titled: ‘Technologies of Care: Food Allergy Treatments in Japan and the UK’. Grant number: 22K01071 (2022-2026). Amount: 3,640,000JPY. My PhD and postdoctoral research focused on irregular labour and masculinities in Japan, looking at the lives of men known as ‘freeters’ and was supported by a Japan Foundation Japanese Studies Fellowship (2006), Federation for Women Graduates (FfWG) Main Foundation Grant (2007), Meiji Jingu Studentship (2008), and a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010).
